It should be a direct physical replacement since the form factor remains the same. Regarding the cooling, using a thermal pad to bridge the module to the metal housing is definitely recommended; it helps significantly with heat dissipation during sustained high-load scenarios on the 6GHz band.

Your opinion is based on an understandable impression, but I believe the underlying assumption is incorrect:

Shielding starts at the PCB level and ends with the shielding cans; it does not start with them:

The old V1.1 design was completely different from the V2.1 design. It could not have been fixed simply by adding shielding cans, as Betonmischer demonstrated.

The visible separation of the different Wi-Fi chips is only one part of the overall design.


To me, it looks as though Banana Pi’s business model positions its router boards as a way to promote its OEM/ODM services:

For some time now, I have had the impression that considerably more effort is being put into the board designs.

I received v2.1 today and have just installed it. The new module barely fits in a low-profile case. The R4 board appears slightly bent when all the screws are fully tightened, so I had to loosen them slightly.

I also bought a larger case, but it is designed for the SFP version, while mine is the 2.5GbE model. :frowning:

As for the BE14 v2.1 performance, I have not noticed any significant difference yet. Time will tell. I am currently running OpenWrt SNAPSHOT r35205-97d6719ca7.

Could you share your experience with previous module version? Did you had any range or performance issues?

I had the same issues with noise and low upload speeds on the previous version of the Wi-Fi module. With the new version, at least the download speed does not degrade as much as it did before.

Previously, the download speed could drop from 1200 to 800 Mbps. Now it stays more consistently around 1000–1100 Mbps.

I have updated to the latest snapshot. I am using only 2.4/5 GHz AX; 6 GHz is still not working for me.
