Now comes the NAND failure. I think it’s due to the RAM. Although it works fine, I’ve been able to add 5GB to the eMMC and record perfectly.

I’m posting the version I have on the eMMC.

The RAM, which I used without any problems, is 8GB.

In addition to the 8GB of RAM, I also allocated space to the disk to download things that have nothing to do with RAM.

Can someone help me with bad sectors in NAND RAM? Is this normal?

The speed is still adequate with WireGuard VPN in between

Your nand bl2 misses DDR4 4BG mode so only 4gb are detected

sorry to jump in but i am also interested because it is a bit blurry how everything works together…

does it means that the boot doesn’t rely only on the sd card but also on nand info? so the image that can be produce from your git is to update the nand with additionnal fixes?

The boot process between my image an openwrt should be same till uboot (except i use fixed offset for fip and openwrt uses fip in ubifs). So replacing of bl2 (which is loaded before fip) should be same.

thx for the input. is there some doc that explain that? if i understand you well, we have a layer on top of openwrt/image that also load drivers and hw info? that might be why my sfp+ fiber sfp-10g-AOC1M isnt properly handle as well.

Concerning the image that can be build with your git, can we build it inside a docker on arch64? The *.img produce should then be flashed into nand to “upgrade” R4 firmware? do i understand it well ?

It looks like there is no R4 instruction page on openwrt wiki. I can only guess it is working. Afaik you need the nand_ubi_8G_bl2.img for openwrt…but you can only try it,i cannot give any guarantee that it works as i’m not experienced with openwrt. I use debian and a different building environment. I also use gpt like sdk and no ubi. But for bl2 this should be not relevant.

Have not tried building u-boot/atf in docker or on target platform (arm64). Only have a docker environment from another user in my kernel-repo.I’m sure build-script has to be changed to not using crosscompiler.

Good morning @frank-w, thanks for your advice. If I understood the SD card image correctly, it must have BL2 inside for everything to work correctly. Although I don’t usually use NAND, I always use it on SD. And if I like it, I put it on NAND, but I don’t work with it. I usually work with eMMC, but not that much.

Is it better to work on SD or eMMC if you like the image?

My BPI-R4 8GB also came with the NOTICE: UBI: Bad EC magic in block error too. I assumed I got unlucky but maybe they have bad batch of nand memory? Would be interested to know if the error can be hidden/fixed by marking the blocks or something.

Anyways, I am running my BPI from an SSD so I’ve decided to use the eMMC for the bootloader and preserve the nand for emergencies.

Would be interesting if the error is also from sdcard or only if booting from nand.

Does install to nand work without errors? Do you have 8gb enabled bl2 on nand? Maybe it is only a driver issue or incompatibility issue. But should not be ram related (but it could be that driver failes due to memory boundaries).

Basicly emmc is faster than sdcard,but harder to access from outside (in case you brick it). If you only want boot to uboot and then nvme/ssd,maybe nand is easier when the bug is fixed.

I have not yet done any tests with nand on my 8gb board (and nothing with ubi yet).

Good morning @Frank W. It would also be interesting to hear what @meehien says. Because defective NAND blocks are coming in, I’ve tried several SD cards, so I’m ruling out SD cards.

I still have time to get a full refund and a return of my money, as we don’t know if it will be detrimental to our Banana in the long run.

Could you talk to someone from the Banana creators group who would be more helpful than us, and they could tell you why this is happening? Several of us are affected.

Isn’t UBIFS supposed to deal with nand bad blocks? The main reason of using ubifs anyway.

Find a way to write the ubi-image-file again to nand, correctly. If it was merely hardcopied by the vendor, this does not work.

Use something like:

ubiformat -f ubi-image-file

But anyway, I’m not using nand, I can’t help any further then some suggestion.

So, if you first start using the board, why not use the easiest storage medium, sdcard first? When that functions as you want, move on to emmc/nand. You’ll need a running system first to use a tool (ubiformat?) to write to the nand correctly, marking bad blocks.

would be nice to have some procedure to check that as i received my 8gb version this week.

I don’t believe the issue with our 8GB boards is due to defective hardware, but rather because the loaded BL2 is not the one intended for the 8GB, but the one for the 4GB version.

This is what the UART debug output showed with my board out of the box. It recognized the 8GB correctly and there were no ‘UBI: Bad EC magic in block’ errors. BL2 version was 2.11.0

After tinkering with the board for a while and flashing the NAND with different OpenWRT images, I now have a BL2 version that is lower and only recognizes 4GB, showing exactly all those ‘Bad EC magic’ errors like yours. I don’t mind this because I don’t use the NAND, and both my eMMC and SD are fine, showing the correct 8GB with no bad sectors.

I’m pretty sure the NAND issue is not due to defective hardware and it could be resolved by re-flashing the BL2 version that recognizes the 8GB, specifically BL2: v2.11.0(release) that came with the factory firmware.

But since I have to burn it to the NAND, could you explain how to do it?

I have a UART if I need to do it there, although I don’t think so.

I’ve just reflashed the NAND to its original factory state and can confirm that all the Bad EC magic in block errors are gone. Our 8GB boards are definitely not defective; it’s simply an issue of incompatibility between certain 8GB NAND sectors and the BL2 images intended for the 4GB boards, that’s all.

To revert the NAND to its factory state, I simply booted from the SD and flashed the 8GB NAND image available in the Banana Pi documentation, which you can find here:

You can keep the images on the SD and eMMC as they are now since they don’t show any errors, having the BL2 that corresponds to the correct RAM size.
