[BPI-R3]: BPI-4G LTE Module SIM

Hi,

I am trying to get the Quectel EC25-E 4G modem to run on my BPI-R3.

Trying both of the following documentations resulted in a similar issue “sim_not_present”

https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wan/wwan/ltedongle https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wan/wwan/modemmanager

I installed

opkg install kmod-usb-net-qmi-wwan uqmi luci-proto-qmi kmod-usb-serial-qualcomm

Rebooted and the device appears. I can configure the interface using the O2 settings

Here is the syslog if that helps.

Using the modem manager as mentioned before did not work either and yielded the same issues which I try to rectify in:

Does anyone have a suggestion or idea?

Thanks in advance Mike

Does your card has a sim-slot or do you use the one from r3?

R3 Shematic says that pins 8,10,12,14 of mpci slot are connected to r3 sim slot.

Have not found schematic of this card but pictures show that it can hold a sim-slot on bottom so maybe some cards exist with soldered sim-interface.

I am using the slot from the BPI-R3. The extension card delivered with the modem cannot be plugged in anywhere except via USB. having that dangling outside w/o an enclosure doesn’t meet my eye

But I will unmount it just to be certain if there isn’t a SIM slot hidden beneath. Thanks for the tip!

Oh,you do not use the mpcie slot and connected usb “over the air”? How does this look like?

Then you miss the sim pins of the mpcie slot…sorry for not mention this before (it is not only usb).

There is an old image, still with the “abusive” antenna wiring, in this post of mine:

I have the 4G module plugged into the mPCIe so very much as expected. I guess I expressed myself inaccurately causing some confusion.

Ok,if your card is in the mPCIe slot then you can look into your cards shematics if the pins for sim-slot are exposed on the mPCIe connector on same position (i guess if exposed then pins match). Maybe there is a switch or soldering point to choose between pins or the on-card sim slot if there is one.

Else make sure the sim is correctly inserted.

Hi @dangowrt,

apologize to drag you into this topic but I found your comment from another post quite interesting:

Do you have a suggestion how I might proceed getting the original BPI bpi 4g module to work on the BPI-R3?

PS: I believe the SIM got blocked unintentionally and the error that it was not found is misleading as I can get the SIM IDs via:

qmicli --device=/dev/cdc-wdm0 -p --dms-get-ids
[/dev/cdc-wdm0] Device IDs retrieved:

Update: Digging into QMI-cli

followed by some googleing I found:

Though, here my Latin ends as I have no oscilloscope nor any other means to proceed. And even if, I start to believe (I sincerely hope it isn’t), this is a hardware issue.

Many thanks in advance Mike

If you see the card/phone number then access to sim works.

I wrote some steps when playing with my modem in debian (not really good structured i know…more notes than tutorial), but maybe this helps a bit

https://wiki.fw-web.de/doku.php?id=en:bpi-r3:lte

In my case i had only mbim mode working as i could not change the FCC authentication in qmi mode

Afair the bpi modem is not compatible to (all) european frequencies.

Yep, have checked your doku today after which I was inclined to “drag in” Daniel since his post was my “final destination”. If that modem indeed in incompatible with EU frequencies, I’d have to have a conversation with the seller on Amazon but I think it’s totally fine because the necessary bands are supported:

qmicli --device=/dev/cdc-wdm0 -p --dms-get-band-capabilities
[/dev/cdc-wdm0] Device band capabilities retrieved:
        Bands: 'gsm-dcs-1800, gsm-900-extended, gsm-900-primary, wcdma-2100, wcdma-850-us, wcdma-900'
        LTE bands: '1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 38, 40, 41'

Checking the validity of the PIN makes me think the SIM in blocked.

qmicli --device=/dev/cdc-wdm0 -p --uim-verify-pin=PIN1,####
error: couldn't verify PIN: QMI protocol error (3): 'Internal'
[/dev/cdc-wdm0] Retries left:
        Verify: 0
        Unblock: 0

Attempting to unblock it throws an error I find no explanation for:

qmicli --device=/dev/cdc-wdm0 -p --uim-unblock-pin=PIN1,########,####
error: couldn't unblock PIN: QMI protocol error (3): 'Internal'
[/dev/cdc-wdm0] Retries left:
        Verify: 0
        Unblock: 0

The modem also seems to have established a GSM connection

uqmi -d /dev/cdc-wdm0 --get-signal-info
{
        "type": "gsm",
        "signal": -65
}

Inserting the SIM into my mobile it unlocks at first attempt. Quite a riddle, isn’t it …

Edit: Some more details. Maybe anyone spots something.

Thanks Mikew for opening this topic, and thanks frank-w for support!

It looks for my, that i have the same problem like mikew. → I also came to the conclusion, that the problem is located between SIM-card and modem.

My setup is the Quectel EC25-EUX modem, direct connected with mini PCI-E slot. And I’m using the SIM-slot of BPI-R3. I have two nano-SIM Cards (Vodafone and O2). Because of nano-SIM, I use a SIM-Card holder:

I’m working the last four days on this topic. But I’m still new at openwrt!

Because of the question, “Matches the pinning of the EC25 with BPI-R3”? It shoudl:

The Pin 44 worked too (for Card detection hot-plug)! (It has to be activeted, but is no “game changer”)

My first trys starts after installing the packages of QMI, MBIM and modem manager from the nown help sites. I used them in LUCI:

→ All of this programms telling me, in its unique way, that i have a problem with the Sim detection. I tried both cards with activated and deactivetad SIM-Pins. Also “0000”. It did not work!

After that i read much about this kind of problems. First of all is the Modem installed (dmesg)? Should be: grafik

Than i worked with shell commands to get my information like mikew and get same results

→ mmcli -m 0

It is not difficult to understand! Everthing okay (?), but SIM is missing.

!!! During this four days (sim in, sim out …), i get randomly two or three times a “present” SIM CARD !!! (not reproducible)

In this context, can someone tell me what “Application [1] and [2]” is???

After that i work deeper and use AT Commands. After I find out how to do that (I use picocom with putty W-Lan connection and fist AT and than AT+ATE1 “to see” my inputs) i tryed some thinks out.

For example:

→ turn on “LTE ony” connection (worked)

→ I changed the Voltage from 1.8 to 3 and auto mode (no effect)

→ turn on SIM detection (working), sim precence is not detected after “put in” but it is detected, that there is no SIM after pull out (some things are working)

→ reboot modem (no effect)

→ List of currently available networks (worked)

grafik

→ Everything what i’m doing shows me, that I have a good connection to the modem. And the modem worked.

→ The only comments which are not working are the USIM comments!

Mikew shared a link of Questel-forum with shows the same problems of other users. Im not sure what can it be.

→ Is the signal relly polluted with noise? (Questel Modem Problem)

→ Incompatibelity (wrong capacitors)

→ Simcard holder problem.

→ software problem? Something switched after boot?

Because I do not know, I’m not sure what my next steps:

→ soldering sim card holder on the backside of EC25

grafik

→ buying an Quectel Modem with simcard holder on the backside:

→ Adapter Card:

→ buying a new modem from other producer? Sierra Wireless AirPrime MC7455 → good modem?

@Lorem_amicus thanks for your reply and quite interesting that occasionally you got the SIM detected. Did you check dmesg around when you got the positive SIM recognition?

It also seems you are suing modemmanager. I guess it comes with it’s own bundled driver which might explain the behavior. OpenWrt “interviews” the device, gets some basic drivers, then maybe other drivers intervene. Just guess work, though.

Maybe one rather important aspect to add. I have read that the SIM is only checked for / detected upon boot but not after OpenWRT started already. I could not verify this due to the apparent reasons. As you, I am stuck with AT commands as well.

No, I do not check dmesg.

I delated the LUCI interfaces after my fist try’s.

And after working into AT commads I used: AT+CIMI for checking SIM card.

Something nice I found today: gcom -d /dev/cdc-wdm0

For my unterstanding the SIM card should recognized by the Modem. I buyed the modem last year because of chat recommendation, and its also on the Wiki side:

grafik

I will go forward …

I was looking for new 4G modems. I found this interesting ones:

→ Sierra Air Prime MC7455 → SIMCOM SIM7600G-H-PCIE

After comparing the pinning of these two Modems, it becomes more clear, that the BPI-R3 PCB design looks made for Quectels EC25. The most Pin’s (MC 7455 and SIM7600) matching, but for example the 44 which is for USIM_Presense did not match (i think its not nessesary to work). But I’m also not sure about other Pins.

The interesting part of my journey were the technical advices of the Sierra Air Prime MC7455:

It is just a speculation (becase I have no measurements) but after reading this text, it becomes more clear how difficult it can be to invent a working design.

On the SIMCOM SIM7600G-H-PCIE Datasheet i found this:

grafik

Today I sold this Adapter:

There is a more advanced one (?) on Aliexpress:

This Adapter will arrive me within the next week. I will check …

Got an update. Magically, after updating some packages today (might be unrelated!) and restarting the 4G modem started to work as expected. No, at least intentional, change to the configuration … as follows my log in case anyone spots the difference compared to previously shared logs.

Your Setup was: → Quectel Modem is inside mini PCI-E slot of BPI-R3 and Sim card is also inside SimSlot of BPI-R3?

Today, I also worked on the SIM card detection problem:

My new setup:

With SIM card inside the adapter card, now I have a present SIM card on the first time. I also rebooted, it is a stable recognition without any Sim card detection problems:

But for today is enough! Next time i will try to establith an internet connection.

Any updates to this thread? I would like to try Quectel 5G RM521F-GL, or RM520N-GL modem in the US.

Do you have a purchase link for this adapter? This is the one that works?

First of all the modems RM521F-GL and RM520N-GL are M2 form Factor? My Adapter should be wrong for your Modems!

My Adapter ist Mini PCI-E to Mini PCI-E for Quectel EC25. What you are looking for is a Mini PCI-E to M2 adapter. But I have no experiance with that! These Mini PCI-E of BPI-R3 is connected via USB2.

If you want to use faster Modems it is my a better idea to use the USB3 Port. But these requires an other adapter.

There are the Links for MY Adapter: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256801512657619.html?search_direct=true&spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdapt

But I buyed my Adapter Card from Amazon Germany. I looked for you (US): https://www.amazon.com/SUPERPLUS-Mini-Adapter-Self-Elastic-Holder/dp/B07T33NQPF?th=1

Thanks for this valuable information! I think I will wait for the BPI-R4, hopefully it can fully utilize these modems that I am wanting to use.

Just as a reference. I bought this one and it works. Though, I have not fully setup things to use it as a fail over in case the dial up fails.
