[BPI-R3] 4G/5G LTE Working Modules List

Hi there,

I am thinking about getting one of these modules and wondering if anyone has had success? Else, can you list the LTE module you can confirm works with the R3? Hoping for one with esim support and can send/receive text messages. Thanks!

EP06-A CAT6 EP06-E EM12-G EM12 Quectel RM520N-GL EM7430 EM7565 EM160R-GL

Can confirm Sierra EM7565 and Quectel EM160. Quectel EM20 confirmed to NOT work.

Quectel 502 worked as well

em7455 module (+key b adapter) works for me in MBIM-Mode (had not got QMI mode working completely with my card)…

see my wiki for details https://www.fw-web.de/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=en:bpi-r3:lte

has anyone been able to get an esim/usim/eUICC capable lte module to work? In a perfect world I could use an esim and sim chip simultaneously to have a nice load balanced configuration. I think I’ll try out the Fibocom Wireless Inc. L860-GL-16 and see if itll work. The FM101-GL-12 appears to be a solution as well.

Also the Quectel RM510Q-GL 5G Sub-6 GHz & mmWave M.2 LTE Module… “The module optionally features integrated GNSS (GPS/GLONASS/BeiDou/Galileo) for rapid and precise positioning, while integrated eSIM optionally allows remote account provision without needing to open the device. The RM510Q-GL supports nearly all major carriers worldwide and is ideal for globally deployed mobile devices including industrial routers, industrial PDAs, rugged tablet PCS and digital signage.”

did you use the one with or without sim card slots?

looks like the one without sim card slots wont be to me for a few weeks or i can order one with 2 NANO SIM Card Slots… does anyone know if I use the one With 2 NANO SIM Card Slots will it not work since there is a sim on board the R3?

I have an adapter without sim because r3 have already a sim slot which works with the adapter

yeah, i figured! it arrives tomorrow and if it doesn’t work, will update this thread, return it then wait for the one without sim slots.

:: crossing fingers it works ::

Have you got it working? Have you tried qmi mode too?

I believe so, I had a del laptop with a wwan slot and a bootable linux had me on my way.

Hello,

Is there an official link of modems that work? I got ROOter to bootup up last night on my new BPI-R3 kit.

Anyone get the Quectel RM520N-GL modem to work? This what I would like to try.

If this is a 4g modem only using usb2 it should work in the mPCIe slot

Afaik there is no such list.

Bummer, I see that the Quectel RM520N-GL modem is:

  • USB 3.1/PCIe 3.0 Super Speed Interface

This seems like a huge design over site? 10GB SFP, 2.5GB Ethernet, and then USB 2/PCIe ?

Argh, wished I knew this BEFORE purchase, sigh…

Pcie lanes are mapped to m.2 slot and they cannot be splitted. And usb3 is front-usb…only usb2 is multiplied over hub to mpcie slot and the back connector

Meaning, my situation will not work? The Quectel RM520N-GL modem probably REQUIRES USB 3.1/PCIe 3.0 ?

See schematic here: https://wiki.fw-web.de/doku.php?id=en:bpi-r3:start#usb_pcie

Thanks, but all that is above my head. I hope the R4 does not suffer from this limitation.

I also wanted to load more packages to tinker, but seems the IoT devices aren’t designed for this. Guess I might go the x86 route, as all these devices seem to be ~40-55% memory and storage usage on loading ROOter/OpenWRT.

R4 will have one m.2 with pcie/usb3+usb2 and one with pcie+usb3

Wow! What an epic page of data. YOU ARE THE MAN!

I see that I was looking at the incorrect modem data, The manufacturer’s pdf shows this: INTERFACE -

  • USB 2.0 × 1
  • USB 3.0/3.1 × 1
  • PCIe 3.0 × 1
