Banana Pi M3 is stupidly hot in idle ! + other issues

Hello !

I’ve just got a new Banana Pi M3 and I have this on it:

Linux bpi-iot-ros-ai 3.4.39-BPI-M3-Kernel
PRETTY_NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux 8 (jessie)"
NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux"
VERSION_ID="8"
VERSION="8 (jessie)"
ID=raspbian
ID_LIKE=debian

Doing even the most basic thing on it makes it run wildly hot ! I literally can’t touch it. And I don’t think this is a normal behavior. The device doesn’t seem reliable.

Linux 3.4.39-BPI-M3-Kernel (bpi-iot-ros-ai) 	06/18/2019 	_armv7l_	(8 CPU)

avg-cpu:  %user   %nice %system %iowait  %steal   %idle
           2.17    0.00    1.53    0.03    0.00   96.27

avg-cpu:  %user   %nice %system %iowait  %steal   %idle
           1.01    0.00    4.28    0.38    0.00   94.34

As you can see the CPU is mostly idle, yet it’s very, very hot.

Also, I have some other curiosities that I would like help with.

What is the latest version of OS for this device ? Because a normal Raspbian won’t work. I found Jessie and I have no idea if it’s up to date.

The Kernel looks ancient.

Also, I have issues with GCC: I can’t update it. It is at 4.9.2 version gcc (Raspbian 4.9.2-10+deb8u1) 4.9.2 and it says that it is up to date. How could that be ? GCC latest release is 9.1.

I suspect that because of the very old GCC I get the following errors:

error: #error This file requires compiler and library support for the ISO C++ 2011 standard. This support is currently experimental, and must be enabled with the -std=c++11 or -std=gnu++11 compiler options.
 #error This file requires compiler and library support for the \

you can try this https://www.armbian.com/bananapi-m3/

I will try it. It is unsupported though. I really hope it works.

I’ve installed armbian, but it still doesn’t work.

I think this board is shit and I need another one.

follow this posting to get the M3 running in general… Banana M3 does not show up in netscan // is there a CONTRL LED/ how tofind the error??
