What SFP+ modules are supported by the BPI-R4 MT7988A (Filogic 880)?

would be nice to have a bit more info when adding to the list:

SFP+ H!Fibre 10G CISCO-FINISAR : FTLX8571D3BCL-C2 BPI-R4 6.9-main :white_check_mark: requires basic BPI-R4 patches of course Amazon DE

what does that mean requires basic BPI-R4 patches of course ? it is not explain anywhere in the wiki :-/

Bpi-r4 is not yet fully supported by mainline linux,so you need patches (ethernet, sfp, usxgmii pcs,…) done in my repo or openwrt for basic r4 support.

so if i takes openwrt 24.10.1, it should be supported?

tbh, it is really a shame to not have a bare minimum list of compatible devices that should be supported ootb (either openwrt or linux). i got an aoc fiber and no issue on my switch but error on the R4 without any way to fix it or direction to get help.

i am now trying to find another one on AliExpress. now, i decided to ask the seller if those sfp would work on R4 but tbh it is kind of a royal pain and they have most of the time no idea.

You cannot compare a switch with a router like bpi-r4.

A switch only uses the sfp as media converter, not connecting the sfp-gpio pins (los,tx fault,…). Linux requires these pins in devicetree and if they are not used as this (like on most gpon sfp los is used as uart) it is not a board issue.

For copper sfp mostly a phy chip is used to make the rate adaption. Some phy chips have drivers in linux some not. Mostly you do not know which phy chip is on the sfp till plugging in and read the eeprom.

And all user that have added information to my compatibility list have only a few sfp,not all available on the market  most are also doing support in freetime a buing the sfp…not getting free samples from vendors.

Some like daniel and me got free bananapi routers for testing and adding software support in our/their free time.

hi Frank, sorry if my previous statement was misleading :pensive:

your compatibility list is great and useful and a big thanks to all the contributor for their help.

i had more in mind a vendor ootb list as when selling a product you normally provide some minimal info. At least, what i was hoping but this piece of hw remind me of Gentoo in early 2000 with all hand made

Wil stay on the learning curve and thank you for your help and time
