SFP or SFP+ on Banana Pi BPI-R4 (MT7988)?

The documentation says the MT7988 has 2 X 10 GbE SFP ports, but these must be SFP+ right?

Confusing.

They are SFP+ but compatible with SFP.

They are not 100% backward compatible and some SFP modules (such as TP-LINK SM410U) do not work as expected with the BPi-R4. This is because SFP+ apparently mandates that the module should only be supplied with power if Moddef0 signal is pulled to ground. However, some SFP modules (such as the aforementioned SM410U) only pull Moddef0 once they receive power…

I have this module working on banana R3 and banana R4

Would be interesting to know about 10 Gigabit LC transceivers which work…

I expect practically all 10G fiber SFP+ transceivers to work without any issues, only xPON and RJ-45 modules are problematic because they support multiple speeds, draw a lot of power, …

I have a 10Gtek DAC (CAB-10GSFP-P0.5M) and a H!Fiber (AXS85-192-M3) SFP+ Modul and i can’t get them to work with the BPI-R4 and OpenWRT any hints to get them runing.

The output I recive:

Wed Dec 18 13:05:24 2024 kern.warn kernel: [ 1101.042612] sfp sfp2: please wait, module slow to respond
Wed Dec 18 13:06:19 2024 kern.err kernel: [ 1156.472603] sfp sfp2: failed to read EEPROM: -ENXIO

The forum is full of people saying they cannot get any 10G transceivers to work correctly.

Have you gotten 10Gbe to work reliably? if so, please share info.

I had no issues getting my h!fibre 10g fibre sfp+ working on r4.

This sfp works OK

and this dac/oac too

and some link to aliexpress https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006475051775.html https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005712672944.html https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005571792532.html https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006179914553.html

Write to the seller after purchase that you want to use this for bananapi bpi-r4/Chinese equipment then he will program the sfp stick

How are the temperatures with the UACC-CM-RJ45-MG? I am wondering if I should just get that, or if I should wait for the even lower power 1.5W module from FS.

Okay, great to hear! i’m using these 10Gbe transceivers:

So they should work fine?

Fiber sfp should work without issues…most problems are with copper ones due to phys (fibre do not have them) and ont/ftth/gpon sfps due to some special things (uart over gpios mapped to sfp cage, bootup time due to own linux/openwrt on sfp etc).

Do you really need LR module (1.4km)? SR (300m) mostly is enough.

what would be better compatibility module? Cisco SFP-10G-SR ? Ubiquiti UniFi UF-MM-10G? Mikrotik S+85DLC03D? Netgear AXM761?

to work with openwrt?

I have only the hifiber 10g sfps,so cannot compare the others

thx for your fast answer

this all sfp thing is new to me and i dont really understand how those modules work.

if i look at the hifiber, it states that it works with like 6 brand. When ordering on AliExpress, i have to communicate a brand to guarantee that it will works for the given device…so that puzzle me…if i provide a given brand supported by the hifiber(like cisco sfp-10g-sr) then it should works as well or the hifiber as a more generic eeprom model that will adapt to different brand?
