BPI-R4 std+poe+8GB testing snapshot images 25/05/08

Hi, since im waiting for my device to arrive, i just decided to fire up my dev environment, take some time reading and fiddeling out what to do with the new hardware.

In first im not a professional dev, i dont know if the image is even booting :wink: So in this approach i only added some packages like luci a nice argon theme and the new firmware which should fix the txpower.

Ah and used wpad-mesh-openssl since on my other devices i got the best compatibility in connecting wpa3 devices + im using mesh and never got it working with wpa3 encryption using the full package. Also i saw reports that openssl fixes wifi speed.

There are so many patches around but one says do apply next one dont, so first testing what works and what not.

Oh and i forgot i added some compiler optimizations, maybe they crash or make things go faster.

  1. Is it able to boot at all
  2. Does the wifi work as expected
  3. Is the switch now able to handle 100mbit and 1000mbit devices properly without degrading all to 100mbit
  4. Does the fan work as expected
  5. everything else working/stable

Here i will constantly updating fixed images if im able to fix it

Good morning, @Phelan_Ward_Kell I used your SD card image. I was able to use all the bands, but only with the country shown in the image. If you change countries, some bands stop working. With yours, only the one shown in your image is valid for the country indicated.

I changed it for mine, and all the bands worked, but the rest worked fine. It recognized the 8GB on the SD card without any problems.

Then I recorded directly from the SD card to the NAND. Here’s the problem: when you boot, it says ā€œfailedā€ and won’t boot on the NAND. I’ll give you the error message that appears when you try to boot from the NAND.

I have used all your u-boot in your repertoire and they are valid, it recognizes in my image that I used for the 4gb nand, now it recognizes the nand as 8gb, but when recorded directly from the sd, it gives some corrupted blocks, but then when it starts again everything comes out perfect and it recognizes the 8gb nand, without any problem, if the first blocks bother someone I advise you not to use it but it works perfectly I leave the complete log so that the erroneous blocks can be seen, but then once they finish it starts to boot with the menu in nand, recognizing the 8gb.

I’m posting the image from the NAND, as if it recognizes 8GB.

Then I downloaded CFDisk from the NAND flash drive and installed it.

Once installed, we run cfdisk /dev/mmcblk0 and I’ve given it more space in eMMC so we have more gigabytes to be able to install everything we want since I have both the 4GB RAM and the 8GB RAM. This space exists and is the same on both boards and is unused. Once we run the command, a screen like this will appear.

In free space, in green, you’ll see 7.2GB free. This, which is unused on both boards, we’ll give to eMMC.

We’ll search for dev/mmcblk0p5 and go to resize. We’ll delete the 7.2G. I put 5G. You have to enter it that way for it to recognize it. We’ll press Enter. Then we’ll go to the write tab and it will ask you to confirm with yes. Write it, and that’s it! That’s it!

Now we’ll reboot into NAND, but when the menu appears, we’ll click on install in EMMC. However, once you reboot, you’ll see that those 5 GB still don’t appear in the software, which is where they should appear. However, this is normal since we’ve already recorded the NAND image. Now you can install your OpenWRT-MediaTek-Filogic-Bananapi_bpi-r4-Squashfs-SysUpgrade.itb from EMMC. Once you reboot, the 5 GB will appear, allowing you to install everything you wanted.

Now, I’ll leave you the image I used to burn the first image to SD, which perfectly recognizes the 8 GB. This image has no errors, but it’s very simple, since we want it to be the base for burning it to NAND, since the NAND doesn’t have much space, so you can’t do much.

As I mentioned, if you don’t mind the first bad blocks in NAND, you won’t have any problems if you want to try it. It’s the easiest way I’ve found: with a 4GB RAM image, the NAND will recognize the 8GB from the SD, so that the NAND will recognize all 8. And we can write to eMMC from the same menu. Then, everyone can update to the version they normally use.

If anyone knows how to remove the first bad errors, I’d appreciate it, although they don’t bother me.

First of all thanks for testing. the ubi notice is nothing to care about, its as it says a notice and normal after a flash_erase. (at least for what i know, correct me if im wrong)

What i dont really understand, all bands work in my image? or all bands work in your image? problematic you compare with 24.10 and the mtk feed. since upstream shouldn’t use the feed anymore besides this how is reception/wifi speed/snr with my image compared to yours. better, worse, same? do you have some 100mbit lan devices to check speeds on switch if 1000/100mbit devices are connected?

Let me tell you a little bit about your SD card image, it works perfectly, but if you burn it from the NAND menu, the NAND doesn’t boot and it gives the error I mentioned in the first image directly.

This error appears when you boot your image from the NAND and it does not advance, it remains stopped,

Regarding Wi-Fi, it only works correctly in the country your image is in. If you change countries, some bands stop working.

The 6G in your image doesn’t work at first, but by adjusting the parameters within Wi-Fi without making any changes using your regulatory.db, I finally got it to work. The maximum power was 20 dBm on all 3 bands.

When you change countries, it dropped to 5 dBm or 7 dBm; I don’t remember which of the two it was on the bands that were working.

Normally, when you change countries, only one band worked, and it was random.

That’s when I installed mine, and of course it’s not the official one; it works in all countries and all bands, but always at maximum power.

What I didn’t notice was the signal/noise ratio on yours. I’ll post a picture of mine. I only enable it for Amazon since I work with VPN, and I only have public IP Wi-Fi since Amazon requires it to view it. My Wi-Fi on the Banana is disabled the rest of the day.

For regular Wi-Fi, I use the Xiaomi BE10000 for power and noise. I have this as a secondary router with constant VPN. The router that distributes to my switch is the Banana, and since it’s 10GB with 8 ports, I don’t have any devices on any of my 1000/100mbit PCs.

I only have 2.5GB and 10GB network cards on the PCs I have at home.

The Wi-Fi card I use in all three PCs is a Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 Wi-Fi 7 High Band Simultaneous (HBS), so I don’t think it’ll work for further testing.

Regarding my image, I used your u-boots to mount mine. It works fine on SD, and it also works for writing to NAND, as I showed you, and writing from NAND to eMMC.

With yours, when writing from SD to NAND, it didn’t work when booting, and I don’t know why.
