[BPI-R4-PRO-4E] Troubleshooting - ERR light and non-functional ports

I’m not sure if I have a hardware fault or a bad configuration. OOTB ports 1-4, the 2.5G LAN, were unresponsive.

My board was pre-flashed with a 2025 version of OpenWRT 24.10, when trying to flash it with an SD card I kept getting CRC errors with both the officially provided version here and an OpenWRT 25 image by @frank-w I found on these forums, my gut says that’s a me problem but I can’t be sure. I was able to flash it from within OpenWRT to the officially provided updated image, same issues. The last thing I’ve found that might be related was in the getting started section of the docs is to try setting ‘setenv bootconf_extra mt7988a-bananapi-bpi-r4-pro-4e-iphy’ which seemed to be pre-set to that but I tried setting it anyway, same issues.

As for the ERR light itself, I could not find any info on what sets it off or where to even begin to try figuring that out, so here I am posting here.

First try to get serial log vis debug console to see when happens exactly.

I’m not sire the openwrt image i have built is working as i did it vefore having the board for testing…in my kernel repo i had to change aome things after it.

Grabbed the log. Cold boot, only cables in are power via barrel jack and console. LAN port 1 plugged in after the log finished but produced no output.

Have you tried putting posts manually up (ip link set lanX up) and assing an ip address (e.g. ip a a 192.168.0.19/24)? If the ports are bridged ip assignment must be done on the bridge

5: and 6: I’ve identified as the working 1G and combo 1/10/SFP ports, the state changes to up when I plug a cable in as expected. As for the rest, no change no matter which port.

I did not think to try ip link set lanX up before, I attempted it with everything and no change, no lights on the ports.

This is why I’m thinking it could be a hardware issue, the software seems to recognize that the ports are there and enabled but physically connecting a cable gets no response at all. I guess I’m just hoping against hope that I’m wrong and I forgot something stupid that’ll fix things.

Do not rely on leds…e.g. the as21 phy driver (not sure loaded here) has a bug breaking them

Try to set mxl_lan* and br-lan up give br-lan an ip address and try to ping a host in same subnet or at least look with ip a if port state goes up, currently it looks like you have bot connected a cable

That ip a was used when cables were only plugged into the 2.5G ports. I should have stated that, my bad. The lan bridge overall is working. Devices plugged into the 1G and 1/10G ports can see and ping each other just fine. Here is the output of ip a when three devices are plugged in, one to the 1G, 1/10G, and one of the 2.5G ports.

For the 1G and 1/10G ports, they can ping each other, I can ping them from the router, br_lan goes up, everything is as should be. But not the third one on the 2.5G port. It acts as if it’s unplugged. This is without using any other commands yet. After trying ip link up mxl_lanX for all of them, no change.

If I move all three devices to the 2.5G ports…

Nothing sees anything, no lights on the device end, br_lan automatically goes down, all devices act as if they’re unplugged. Manually trying to bring br_lan up results in it seeing nothing and it automatically bringing itself back down. Trying ip link up mxl_lanX up changes nothing. The output of ip a is the same, it’s like the 2.5G ports are recognized as present in software but are completely unresponsive on the hardware end.

Same here, the error light is always red despite everything working.
