[BPI-R4] No link on 2.5G interface

I have two of these BPI-R4 2.5G-POE boards. One is working fine and has link on the 2.5G port. Same SDcard and latest OpenWRT 2.5G-POE image inserted into the identical board has no communication on the 2.5G port.

Am I looking at a hardware issue here? Or is there some sort of firmware not included in the OpenWRT image that needs to be updated on the board that is not working?

Edit* - I have ten of these boards now and 4 have the 2.5G ports not working without the factory 21.xx image.

Can you check if the allegedly broken one works with Mediatek 21.xx factory OpenWrt? If yes, and you have the issue only with the vanilla OpenWrt snapshot – this is my case – then we are chasing some missing patch.

If the factory Mediatek 21.xx is not working, then your best bet is to send back the board.

From all I have been tracking till now, seems like there are some differences in the boards that are all marked as “2.5G POE” where some of them work flawlessly and some do not. If only you can ship the board back, maybe that would be the easiest to finally get an answer what is going on

I just got mine 2.5GbE PoE, and running the stock firmware I get no link on my 2.5GbE. Do I need to enable it somehow in order to test it, or should it just work out of the box?

I get no blinking LEDs and this output from ethtool:

EDIT: I also tested with the " SFP replaced with 2.5Gbps version using images" from Banana Pi BPI-R4 - Banana Pi Wiki and OpenWRT snapshot (bananapi_bpi-r4-poe) and still no link

If I run the following command on the stock firmware:

ethtool -s eth1 speed 100 duplex full autoneg off

I can get a sporadic LED blink after a minute, but then it goes black again and ethtool reports “Link detected: no”

If i run the same command on a OpenWrt snapshot i get a crash:

Definitely something going on with some of these 2.5G POE boards. The responds I basically got from sinovoip was “Does the factory image work? If not warranty the board out. If it does work with the factory image, everything is working as intended. We currently don’t support the latest version of OpenWRT”

I am wondering if some of these have faulty phy poe boards or different versions?

I believe mine has a hardware error, its not working with the factory image either

All I managed to gather is the following

  • 2.5G boards without PoE seem to work correctly
  • 2.5G boards with PoE do not work with the following pattern
    • with factory image (based on 21.xx)
      • some just work
      • some have broken autoneg – I managed to get the interface UP after long enough mangling
    • with latest openwrt
      • some just work (the ones that work out-of-the-box with the factory image)
      • if board had ANY problem with factory image, it does NOT work with latest openwrt
    • with latest openwrt built with Mediatek patches (openwrt/feeds/mtk-openwrt-feeds - Gitiles)
      • the same as with vanilla openwrt – if worked with no issues, works; if had any problem, does not work despite custom firmware and mediatek’s patches

My own conclusion still holds – hardware is NOT the same in 2.5G and 2.5G PoE board; further – hardware is NOT the same across all the 2.5G PoE boards.

And this is a valid response, but isn’t it a joke at the same time? With the costs of customs and return shipment being the same as the cost of the board itself, should I care? After testing 1 board and failing, why would I bother further if I can simply go with other device? It’s not like Banana is the only 10G/2.5G capable board in the market.

It is not an isolated case. Random people around have the same issue. People who bought the board at different times. You could get your dude in the lab pick 100 boards from the stock and try 1 by 1. Or you can tell people “just ship it back, we will send you another one and if you are lucky it will work; if not, we will continue playing this whac-a-mole”. Pick your strategy, in the end whatever brings money.

Same story. The 2.5gbe port does not work, and the 1gbe lan ports also do not work.

1g lan ports should have same circuit like zhe 2 sfp versions,so strange that this does also not work…is the mac (eth0) up and switch detected (dmesg)?

Wan has rx/tx packets so seems to work…are lanports mapped to the lanbr? I do not see it in the ifconfig output…brlan has also traffic,but it seems to be from wifi

But i see a warning but without code location which is normally part of such message…looks like it happens on sfp detection…maybe you try without sfp?

Seems somewhere in power management

Do you think there is a problem in the hardware somewhere? I don’t use SFP at all.

Everything seems to be aligned

It looks like there is an sfp in sfp1 slot…or is this the poe port? Not sure if openwrt is already configured with poe board

I have a board with POE, one sfp port and one 2.5gbe port. The firmware is for the poe version. I didn’t know that I needed to configure anything additionally.

Probably a hardware problem, three ports still don’t work. In addition to the 2.5gbe port. I installed the version bananapi_bpi-r4-poe-sdcard.img.gz

Is this the bpi image or mainline openwrt? If bpi version does not work contact bpi for replace/refund.
