Banana Pi BPI-R4 Wifi 7 router board with MediaTek MT7988A (Filogic 880),4G RAM and 8G eMMC

Thanks Frank, Daniel and Norman for confirming that your boards are booting fine. I have tried latest snapshot from 4/15 and still having same issue (please see full boot log below, I have checked/cross-referenced with the default one on openwrt.org for R4 and not seeing anything significantly different).

With the BPI R4 image, I see following data in the log:

Thanks Frank, the recovery image that I can boot shows a different version than yours. Maybe I need to try a custom branch?

Linux OpenWrt 6.1.86 #0 SMP Mon Apr 15 20:50:34 2024 aarch64 GNU/Linux

My kernel version above is not openwrt…it is debian with mainline kernel, just to check if something is broken…openwrt should be same kernel as you as i have not changed it for building (afaik testing kernel is 6.6,but default should be 6.1)

Thanks Frank for help, I have built and deployed an image based on 6.9.0-rc1-bpi-r4-r4_mt76_self, having same thermal issue. Must be something wrong with my board, I will try to return and get another one.

If you are looking for a G/EPON, I recommend ODI DFP-34X-2C2, more information here:

And to reach 2.5gbps, you need some little software modification:

Hi everyone, quick question on this device. I tried to find the information but I couldn’t.

In the specs, the R4 is listed as having 1 SFP WAN and 1 SFP LAN, 1 GbE WAN and 3 GbE ports. I was wondering if either of the WAN ports can be used as an additional LAN port?

Thanks!

Yes, thats how i use it. The rj45-WAN port is used as extension. You only have to modify /etc/config/network if you use openwrt.

Yes, that’s only the default naming printed on the board that’s also copied inside OpenWrt. You can just change the grouping of the network bridge (br-lan and br-wan by default) with LuCi or UCI. Changing the names is also possible, but a bit harder/annoying to achieve.

Thank you both!

The only thing that still makes me hesitate is the cooling situation. Has anyone found a good heatsink that fits the board and allows for acceptable passive cooling? I’m planning to use it without Wi-Fi but with two SFP-GbE modules. Thanks!

Basicly interfaces can be renamed via iproute2 (and also systemd) but i do not know how to integrate it into openwrt config. It is not necessary to patch devicetree

Without case, passive cooling should be fine with some copper. With a case it might be more challenging, the case is not yet finished. What i’ll do (when the case is available + hopefully the wifi card, so only 1 order → 1 shipping cost) is to add an aluminium block to connect the DIE with the case for passive cooling, that should probably work. Then its like the case Aluminum Grid Grooved Case for Raspberry Pi 4 - Maker-Shop.ch | Die Schweizer Macher

About the sfp-rj45-thing… i am also concerned because they get hot-hot. If this is not connected to the case, there is probably no way to run them stable without active cooling.

If it helps, 10G SFP+ with fibre runs a lot cooler than with RJ45. Extract from:

Power Consumption

The 10GBASE-T solution consumes a lot more power than the SFP+ solutions, approximately three to four times more. The power consumption of 10GBASE-T depends on the distance of the cable and it can vary from 2 to 5 watts per port at each end of the cable. On the other hand the SFP+ solutions consume around 0.7 watts per port regardless of the distance of the cable. This is a key difference knowing that in a typical Datacenter there are thousands of cables installed which, if SFP+ is used, would save a lot of money and headaches on a long run.

For the Soc, what I did is an option Banana Pi BPI-R4 Wifi 7 router board with MediaTek MT7988A (Filogic 880),4G RAM and 8G eMMC - #271 by russelltg

thanks but that does not help me, i need rj45 on the sfp+ port

Have you tried passive heatsink? I have some 30x40mm heatsinks which could be put with thermalpad on sfp slots

no not yet, as mentioned, i’ll have a look at that when the case is finished and on my site. the initial question was from ptthst, i was only mentioning that sfp+ to rj45 adapters can get very hot.

Seems like tops is removed from sdk…

There is a note about tarball, but no idea how this should be archieved

Ok thanks. Is there a seller/reseller for this module? I didnt found it. I only see the 1310TX, the 1490RX is part of the G/EPON spec and so not printed? I also found on fs: GPON ONU Stick with MAC SFP 1310nm-TX/1490nm-RX 1.244G-TX/2.488G-RX.

Futher more I am a little confused. The SFP on the R4 are fixed 10G modules, how can a 1.2/2.5G module then work?

The mac behind the sfp slot can be switched between 10G (usxgmii) and 1G/2.5G (sgmii via lynxi driver). All between needs to be done by the sfp (mostly need a phy on the sfp or handle lower speed via ipg)
