that old guide is using kernel 4.4 - that kernel have no working hdmi out. This message shows up as it tries to use hdmi but fails.
go to images section and download 18.04 image to flash on SD card (I used etcher in windows10) This is whole thing - just put that image to SD card and you are done - no need to prepare base image on laptop or anything else.
