The main driver bound with the modem, so that’s ok now at least. Maybe share your full kernel log (dmesg) so we can know what’s missing.

Also ModemManager sometimes fails to detect the T99W175 modem depending on the firmware version of the modem. However, OpenWrt umbim (and luci-proto-mbim) should always work.

Hmm so I rebooted and now there are some wwan0 devices. The same 3 you list actually. I’ll put dmesg at the end of this post.

Interestingly modprob mhi_wwan_ctrl tells me

modprobe: FATAL: Module mhi_wwan_ctrl not found in directory /lib/modules/6.6.32

But opkg install kmod-mhi-wwan-ctrl says “installed in root is up to date”

I tried going in through luci web interface and adding a new network interface using protocol MBIM Cellular, APN fast.t-mobile.com (what I found online for t-mo which is the sim card type I have in sim1). And pointed it at device /dev/wwan0mbim0. After adding that interface and saving and applying it shows up with “Error: Network device is not present”

Hmm, that is a pretty old post though from back in early 2023. Would hope if they were working on an update back then it would’ve been released by now?

But if it were the case, what would I need to do… figure out a way to downgrade the firmware on the modem?

I can try to look into that, but it seems like most things reference windows for firmware update tool, not sure if I have a windows machine with a slot that this modem will plug into lol. I’ll have to do some checking on that. I’m guessing I can order an adapter to work with something I do have, was just hoping to get this thing working without ordering more stuff.

Tempted to pull the trigger on just ordering a quectel 5g modem. They are a lot more expensive of a modem, but I’ve seen elsewhere it referenced as a lot better modem =/ I really have no idea since I’m not very experienced with any of this stuff.

It can also totally be that some incompatibility with ModemManager, or OpenWrt’s script-wrappers for ModemManager, was introduced when switching from Linux 6.1 to Linux 6.6. I don’t have much time to debug this a the moment, but maybe ask people in OpenWrt forums about this as the issue is not specific to the BananaPi R4 (everything on the PCIe/hardware side seems fine) but rather an issue with OpenWrt, ModemManager and that specific modem on Linux 6.6…

I MAY have something useful here: My ath10 9882 wifi card works on the pci bus. Any pcie 3 card (tested ath11k, wcn8755 mtk7915e and mtk7916) does not. It fails at setting up the pcie bus, claiming it is not compliant. I don’t know whether the pcie phy allows downclocking, but it may be a solution here

@frank-w : I tried several modules for this link, but the only I can make work are limited (<5w) PCI 1.1 modules. Do you know whether an overlay is possible that makes this PCIe link think it’s 1.1 only? edit : why I’m asking it: other modules fail detection with a PCIe link compliance error. Tried:

As pcie cards are not defined in dts and i know no such property for pcie controller i guess overlay is not possible.

Imho this needs to be done in driver,but i’m no expert here so cannot guide you more than that.

Module is now detected but in some failed state. Unclear if this is a module issue or BPI R4 issue. The SIM card was detected only once before the patch below.

Now running with this patch. Similar to Qualcomm modems using the mhi driver.
