[Banana Pi BPI-R64] Mainline OpenWRT image

You should mention a commit like this and mention that “ok” needs to be “okay” (fixed that later). The commit above targets a separate file i’ve created while supporting the other switch chip and does not belong to any branch anymore

edit: uploaded fixed commit to 5.11-main

The best way to solve the problem nowadays would be to use Device Tree overlays as described here: https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/devicetree/overlay-notes.html

In that way we do not need to hard-code things which should actually be configurable by the user.

I’ve fixed the issue with the random MAC “flashing up” during boot.

https://git.openwrt.org/?p=openwrt/openwrt.git;a=blobdiff;f=target/linux/mediatek/patches-5.10/112-dts-fix-bpi64-lan-names.patch;h=d061a9139db3e4d1996aeafeee039c933d4bae89;hp=55c84812d0e3ec103ca952decab44bfd0f5ce896;hb=ca14dfb06b09beb664318459241c948bd98c9332;hpb=51ef823f95dbe1ffed1456a739a98bc07cd9a5c9

The MAC address set in U-Boot is now properly handed down to Linux. We will have to wait for the buildbot to run and generate new images containing that change though.

See also https://openwrt.org/toh/sinovoip/sinovoip_bananapi_bpi-r64_v1.1#setting_a_permanent_mac_address_for_ethernet

It’s work good, all network interface has same MAC:

You can see when I enter in luci interface Sat Jan 1 00:00:26 2000 daemon.err uhttpd[1931]: luci: accepted login on / for root from 192.168.1.254. But from this to end of log intenet don’t appear.

Seems like your ip-address gets invalid. If this is not the cause you should test if your client tries v4 or v6…maybe v6 address advertising/routing is not available

This is system log from my previous firmware where internet and luci interface appear together:

Because it includes mt7622.dtsi which defines and enabled the built-in real-time clock by default, Linux uses the time provided by this RTC on boot. However, without a battery connected, the RTC will loose it’s time on power-loss and default to 2000-01-01 00:00:00. This can easily be avoided by disabling the RTC in the device tree source by adding:

&rtc {
  status = "disabled";
};

This should fix many glitches and hopefully also the issue you describe. I’ve pushed the fix into openwrt.git, once buildbots pick it up it should be fixed in images provided on downloads.openwrt.org.

I try new firmware but have same result. I have found that it proceed only if I reboot my internet modem and BPI. But if I reboot only BPI it don’t proceed.

Logs:

Rebot.txt (45.1 КБ)

Reboot_without_restart_modem.txt (44.5 КБ)

The log doesn’t really tell much of what is going wrong there, unfortunately. Is the jump in system time an actual 10 minutes in real-time of waiting or is this rather just NTP catching up? Because both logs look like a connection on WAN is established, an address is leased and DNS servers are being set by DHCP. Is that MAC address of the wan interface also static for you if you set ethaddr env variable in U-Boot? If not, you may have to set that to something static so a re-lease of the same address will succeed after reboot.

In OpenWrt you can set a static MAC on the interface by doing:

uci set network.wan_dev=device
uci set network.wan_dev.ifname='wan'
uci set network.wan_dev.macaddr='02:aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff'
uci commit network

I think it time synchonization. I try reboot some time my BPI and everytime it start frome Sun Mar 7 13:49:48 2021 and after, time synchronized to UTC.

MAC address I sat by command fw_setenv ethaddr.

I try reboot some times: every tyme I turn off power BPI and modem and after 2 minutes turn on. And everytime internet start at once. I don’t know, but it fixed.

As the device doesn’t have a battery to power the built-in real-time clock to keep tracking the time accross power losses, I guess waiting for NTP is the best we can do. Until that point, the most recent timestamp on the filesystem is used as best-effort (which is better than using 2000-01-01 from RTC where surely every single TLS or DNSSec validation will fail). This has always been a problem on plastic routers without RTC, and needs tricky work-around to solve the chicken-egg of NTP needing DNS to resolve the server while DNS may need valid daytime for DNSSec validation…

I’m saying this because this device is no exception there but rather the norm. Most devices OpenWrt supports don’t have any RTC.

Enabling the RTC may be better for warm-reboots (ie. power isn’t actually disconnected, just reboot on console), but unfortunately leaves of waking up at 2000-01-01 00:00:00 on cold starts. I guess this can be fixed in the RTC driver, as other RTC drivers do make sure the time is valid before using it. We could just consider anything before 2020-01-01 as invalid in the driver as a better fix.

Hi, I think you should enable sata port in BPI dts by default, because BPI has two psi-e, and only one sata. And if enable sata, BPI have one pci-e and one sata. But now BPI have two pci-e and zero sata port.

thats why i had enabled sata in my kernel :wink:

Having SATA enabled by default is not an option for OpenWrt as the mPCIe port shared with SATA is the only of the two which has enough space around for oversized modules. The other mPCIe is too close to the Ethernet ports and blocks the modules from fitting. OpenWrt is primarily an operating system for networking tasks, having mPCIe available enjoys higher priority than SATA in this context.

The proper way to have still have to option to have SATA enabled would be to append a device-tree overlay blob to the uImage.FIT making the appropriate changes. OpenWrt at this point doesn’t have an easy way to facilitate that, but you can edit the its file generated during build and add the dt-overlay blob (use dtc to generate that) there, then assemble the image using mkimage.

Maybe you can make two sysupgrade images with sata and with pci-e?

That’s the plan, but for that that dt-overlay blob needs to be generated, some changes are needed in OpenWrt to support that (duplicating the whole DTS just for that is not an option, because that will then need to be maintained as well).

What’s needed for that:

  • extend scripts/mkits.sh to support adding dt-overlay blobs (yes, plural)
  • introduce new variable DEVICE_DT_OVERLAYS:= to list overlay source files in eg. target/linux/mediatek/image/mt7622.mk
  • make use of all that in include/image-commands.mk

Doesn’t look too crazy now that I wrote it down, actually…

Please try building from my staging tree where I added the necessary functionality to let you decide whether SATA or PCIE1 functionality is selected. I’ve tried and by setting the bootconf environment variable in U-Boot (can be done from within Linux using fw_setenv in case you don’t have serial access) you can now select either which device tree overlay blobs to add. It successfully detects my Samsung SATA SSD I hooked up to it for testing (and PCIe1 works when selecting the other config in U-Boot).

https://git.openwrt.org/?p=openwrt/staging/dangole.git;a=summary

I must say that the way device-tree overlay blobs are applied in U-Boot is more limited than I thought it would be. /delete-node/ and /delete-property/ don’t work and trying to replace complex nodes results in broken trees. Hence I use a hack by changing the GPIO_ACTIVE_HIGH to GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW instead of doing it the proper way which would be deleting the output-high property and adding an output-low property (because that doesn’t work).

See this added unit test in U-Boot which fails:

Do you use overlay for linux or uboot too? I guess changing uboots fdt is not possible (to boot kernel from sata) as fdt is loaded on uboot start and environment is loaded after this point. But i guess most users do not need sata in uboot itself,only want to use it in linux as additional storage

Right now I’m only letting U-Boot patch the DTS for Linux. Patching the live DT in U-Boot is also possible somehow, but I didn’t play with that yet.
