Sorry about the excessive length…

I guess it doesn’t matter if the firmware is loaded at each boot, as long as it is loaded at power-on… Haven’t tested to see if I can connect to it yet, but I’m working on it…

BTW, I also enabled the on-board wifi…

I see you use 5.9.0…afair there was a driver-own issue (i saw it only with mt7622, but this uses same driver)…because of this i have updated my 5.9-mt76eeprom to 5.9.3. I do not see the driver own message in your log, but the driver own is directly before the firmware_load function where your message appears…normally on driver own problem the load_firmware should not be called because of return…but maybe it is not completely finished/blocked

So could you try current 5.9-mt76eeprom tree?

Finished compiling using 5.9-mt76eeprom tree. Here is the results of dmesg:

If you want me to disable on-board wifi for now, let me know…

UPDATE: Tried removing the rf file. dmesg output:

root@bananapi:/lib/modules# dmesg | grep mt76

NOTE: These are without a poweroff after removing the file…

The rf file (eeprom) is optional,so you can ignore the failed for it. It looks like the driver own works in your case (no “driver own failed” like in my case), your problem is getting card ready for download firmware

@nagi have you an idea here?

Okay, I got a further complication. Your wiki states that in enable dual APs on the MT7615, you must use:

echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/ieee80211/phy0/mt76/dbdc

After a reboot, I lose the ability to create the second physical adapter with the MT7615. Powering off the board, then powering up seems to “cure” the problem. Firmware loads fine after poweroff, then on. However, as soon as I reboot (not power off then on), these problems presents itself again.

I thought of a potential solution with these steps:

  1. Solder the power button to always come on with power.
  2. Rename the /sbin/reboot command to /sbin/reboot.old
  3. Create a script called /sbin/reboot that calls poweroff.
  4. Blacklist the poweroff module.

What do you think? And would this cause the R2 to boot when powered off by this method?

EDIT: Is there any way to add this option to the mt7615 module, similarly like any other module in the /etc/modules.d directory?

Have not seen this before, but have not done much work with it (cause i still hang on bpi-r64 atf/rootfs)

@nagi can you confirm/explain the reboot problem (second phy cannot be created)?

@Douglas_Orend which kernel have you tried with dbdc?

here i tested with 5.10 and see no problem (dbdc also possible after reboot)

Sorry about the late reply. I’ve tried 5.4.58, plus branches 5.9-main, 5.9-mt76eeprom and 5.10-main. Tried reverting back to your Debian 10 image and not installing the onboard wifi support files. Didn’t help… (This is so annoying…)

Thank you for all your help!

Just compiled 5.10.9… Here is the output I have:

root@bpi-r2:/sys/kernel/debug/ieee80211/phy0/mt76# uname -a

At power-on, DBDC cannot to be set to 1. Same issue after reboot.

EDIT #1: I have this card

I grabbed the file mt7615_rf.bin file and placed it in /lib/firmware/mediatek/ and rebooted. Got this output on next boot:

root@bpi-r2:~# dmesg | grep mt76
[   11.904041] mt7615e 0000:01:00.0: enabling device (0140 -> 0142)

EDIT #2: Just for shits and giggles, I powered off and powered back on. Here is the result:

root@bpi-r2:~# dmesg | grep mt76

strange…i don’t see the patch semaphore message some time (e.g. after 5.6 this should be fixed)…do you have all firmware-files in /lib/firmware/mediatek?

Maybe @sinovoip can help…

oh found something in buildroot environment… first i needed to mount debugfs itself

mount -t debugfs none /sys/kernel/debug/

and then mt76 is phy4 after starting r2 internal wifi…and dbdc file is only there…maybe your phy also differs

# ls /sys/kernel/debug/ieee80211/phy4/mt76/dbdc
/sys/kernel/debug/ieee80211/phy4/mt76/dbdc

so i need to echo 1 to this and wlan2 appears (wlan0 is r2 internal wifi,wlan1 is first phy of mt7615)

Been racking my brain, trying to figure out what I had done. Turns out my mt7615*.bin files were corrupted or something. Got fresh files from a few posts back and now it works properly with 5.9.0, but I’m back at the no 2nd physical after reboot thing… Gonna try with 5.10-main branch, maybe tomorrow…

My /sys/kernel/debug directory does appear to be mounted correctly. The mt7615 card is phy0, unless I add the onboard wireless, then maybe it moves around a little…

What does happen if you echo again to the dbdc? You need to do it every bootup

Echoing 1 to /sys/kernel/debug/ieee80211/phy0/mt76/dbdc on power-up from nothing works. Once the board is rebooted, it does nothing.

EDIT: Yeah, I know that it needs to be done every bootup. I got commands to do so in my /etc/rc.local file.

BTW, powering down the system, then powering up again allows the second physical to come up.
