Black Screen while booting... but desktop is ok

Hello all:

We are having an issue where there is no splash screen while booting, and nothing I do gets any splash screen to show up. This is over HDMI. Once we get to the desktop, everything is fine… but until then, darkness.

I did some looking up on-line to find changes to ‘plymouth’ (/usr/share/plymouth… etc) but nothing I do in there changes anything. Also, there was no /etc/default/grub to edit… I’ve tried even creating one, but nothing helps.

We are running Ubuntu Mate 18.04.02 LTS…

Does any one have any ideas?
